Today in 48 BCE, Pompey was assassinated upon his arrival in Alexandria Egpyt by the counselors of the barely teenaged King Ptolemy XIII, brother to the famous Cleopatra. Caesar had his killers executed upon his arrival in Egypt.
And in 1066, William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy, landed in Southern England, beginning his conquest. The forces loyal to Harold Godwinson, who claimed the throne after Edward the Confessor’s death, were on the way after fighting Viking invaders in the North.
Some years later in 1106, William’s children would be fighting the Battle of Tinchebray in Normandy. William had left his son Robert as Duke of Normandy, and his son Henry I had become King of England. Henry defeated his brother and claimed Normandy and they would remain under one ruler until 1204.

French Royalty, Italian monarchy/aristocracy, Peter the Great, Romanovs, Russian royalty, The Louis of France, The Normans, The Stuarts

Let’s see what today has in store for us!
Today in 1066, an army led by William of Normandy left France, heading for England. William maintaned that his distant relative, Edward the Confessor had promised the crown to him at his death. By William the Conqueror (as he came to be known) would invade England to enforce this claim and change England forever. In 1529 today, Suleiman I (the Magnificent) of the Ottoman Empire would begin laying siege to Vienna in modern day Austria. The seige would be unsuccessful and the Ottomans would withdraw in mid-October.
Not a royal event, but interesting. Today in 1584, Pope Urban VII died after being elected Pope a mere 13 days earlier. His is the shortest papacy in history. He died before his formal coronation, but in his short reign, he did manage to instill the worlds first smoking ban, by threatening excommunication to anyone who smoked, chewed, or snorted tobacco in church.
And in 1922 today, after a disaster of a war with the Turks, Constantine I of Greece abdicated the throne in favour of his son, who became George II, King of the Hellenes.
Our first birthday today belongs to Louis XIII of France, born in 1610. He became King upon the assassination of his father, Henry IV, when Louis was just 8 years old.
Also today in 1657, Sophia Alekseyevna of Russia was born to the Tsar and his wife. Sophia would be the regent for her younger brother Ivan, and younger half-brother, Peter. She would be regent until the majority of Peter who ousted her from power and she retreated to a convent.
And our only death of note today, belongs to Lady Arbella Stuart. Arbella was a first cousin to James I and VI, as James’s father was her uncle. She herself had no aspirations for the throne, but was imprisoned in the Tower of London when she married another claimant to the throne without the King’s permission. This situation was exacerbated by her escape and recapture. She died within the Tower of probable starvation, as she has refused food and was ill from being imprisoned.
Have a great day!

Elizabeth I, Not So Dead Royalty, Romanovs, Swedish Royalty, The Stuarts

Here’s what I found for today!!
Today in 1580, Francis Drake returned to England after his successful circumnavigation of the Earth. It took him 3 years and out of the six ships he sailed with, one returned with him. Six months after his return, Elizabeth I would knight him on the deck of his ship.
In 1687 today, the city council of Amsterdam voted to support financially William of Orange’s invasion on England, known now as the Glorious Revolution.
And in 1810 a new Act of Succession was adopted in Sweden naming French soldier and statesman, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was named the successor to the current childless King, Charles VIII.
In birthdays today, first we have King Christian X of Denmark in 1870. He was actually the only King of Iceland as well, between 1918 and 1944.
And in not-so-dead-sort-of-royalty, today in 1922, Nicholas Romanov, pretender to the no longer existant throne of Russia was born in France.
And in not-so-dead-actual-royalty, today is the birthday of Princess Salma bint Al Abdullah of Jordan. The third child of King Abdullah and Queen Rania was born today in 2000.
No major deaths today! Have a great one guys!!

Dutch Royalty, German Royalty, Not So Dead Royalty, Spanish Royalty

Here you go!!
Today in 1066, the last attempted Viking invasion of England was attempted with the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The death of King Edward the Confessor had caused a succession crisis with the brother of the acting King, Harold Godwinson, attempting the invasion. The English won a decisive victory, but were left tired and unprepared for the invasion force the would land 3 days later, led by William, Count of Normandy.
Two birthdays to mention today, first is that of Frederick William II of Prussia, born today in 1744.
The second belongs in the Not-so-dead royalty category. In 1968 today Prince Johan-Friso of Orange-Nassau, son of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was born. Prince Friso was excluded in the line of succession when he married without Parliamentary approval. Sadly, he was in a skiing accident earlier this year and has been in a coma since Feburary.
And one interesting death to mention today. In 1506, King Phillip I of Castile died in Spain. Phillip the Handsome became King through his wife, Joanna of Castile (or Juana la Loca) , when Joanna’s mother, Isabella died. He would bring the House of Hapsburg to rule Spain, and his son, Charles, would go on to be King of all of Spain (Castile and Aragon), Holy Roman Emperor, and to rule most of contintental Europe.
Have an awesome day!

French Royalty, Hungarian Royalty, Swedish Royalty, The Stuarts, Victorian era

Today in 1645, the Battle of Rowton Heath took place in England. It was part of the First Civil War and the Royalist Army was commanded by Charles I himself. Poor Chuck would be disappointed though as the Parliamentarians scored a major victory.
Our first birthday belongs to Catherin of Saxe-Lauenburg, Queen of Sweden in 1513. Sadly she would pass away at age 22 after falling while dancing and having a miscarriage.
No other major birthdays today, but a few deaths. The first takes us back to 768, when Pepin III, King of the Franks dies, leaving his son, Charlemagne as King.
Today in 1213, Gertrude of Merania, Queen of Hungary was murdered by jealous courtiers. Her death would be avenged many years later, when her son, Bela IV became king. Her daughter is also well known, as Saint Elisabeth of Hungary.
In 1435, Isabeau of Bavaria, Queen of France died in English controlled territory. She had been regent for her husband, Charles VI of France during his bouts of mental illness. Her children would go on to be Charles VII of France, and two of her daughters would be Queens of England.
And lastly, we have the death of Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine in 1950. Victoria was the grand daughter of Queen Victoria and his the maternal grandmother of the current Prince Consort, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Have an awesome day!

French Royalty, The Hanovers, Victorian era, Wives of Henry VIII

Afternoon all!!
Today in 1761, the coronation of King George III and his wife, Queen Charlotte occured in London. George was succeeding his grandfather, George II and would be the longest reigning monarch of England at the time, until his granddaughter, Victoria, broke his record on this day in 1896.
Our first birthday today, belongs to Anne of Cleves, in 1515. Anne was the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England. Their marriage was annulled just six months after it began. Because Anne agreed to the annullment, she was treated kindly by Henry and given several estates and homes, a pension, a place at court, and she was a friend to his daughters until her death.
And in 1601, Queen Anne of France and Navarre, wife of Louis VIII and mother to Louis XIV was born in Spain. This Anne spent time as regent when her husband died, as their son was crowned King of France at age 4.

French Royalty, German Royalty, Plantagenets, The Hundred Years War, The Stuarts, War of the Roses

Here’s what I have for today!!
Today in 1435, Phillip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, signed a treaty with Charles VII, which he announced his support for Charles as King of France, and ended Burgundys alliance with England in the Hundred Years War. A mere four years later, the treaty was broken.
Jumping ahead to 1745, the Jacobite forces under the leadership of “Bonne Prince Charlie”, grandson of the deposed James II and VII of England, Ireland and Scotland, scored a quick victory in the Battle of Prestonpans. The forces loyal to King George II were better prepared for future battles, as they won the overall rebellion.
And in 1792, the National Convention of France formally issued a proclamation of the abolition of the monarchy in France. All references to the ancien regime were being eradicated, including the Christian calendar.
In 1898, a coup occured placing the Empress Dowager Cixi on the throne as regent for her son. She would end what is known as the “Hundred Day’s Reform” in China. In interesting birthdays today, the first is that of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York in 1411. Richard was a key player in the early days of the War of the Roses in England. His sons would carry on his claim to the throne, becoming Edward IV and Richard III, respectively.
We also have today, Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, born in 1415, Sardinian Queen Polyxena of Hesse-Rotenburg born in 1706, and in 1819, Princess Louise Marie Therese of France (granddaughter to Charles X) in 1819.
And in deaths today, the first we have is of Edward II of England in 1327. Edward died in captivity after being overthrown by his wife, Isabella of France and her lover, Roger Mortimer. He abdicated in favour of his 14 year old son, Edward III, and it is disputed whether he died in prison, was murdered, or escaped to live a life in the countryside.
Next in 1558, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, died of malaria at age 58. He had already abdicated the crown of Spain to his son Phillip II, and his brother Ferdinand became the new Holy Roman Emperor. Charles was the grandson of the famed Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain through his mother, and through his father, he was had been heir to the many titles and lands of the early Hapsburg empire.
And in 1875, Princess Alexandra of Bavaria, daughter of Ludwig of Bavaria died at age 49. And more recently, in 1957, King Haakon VII of Norway died at age 85. His wife was actually a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, which puts the Norwegian royal family, albeit far down, in the succession for the crown of the United Kingdom.
Have a great weekend all!!
