Today in 1331, Stephen Uroš IV Dušan declared himself King of Serbia after ending the civil war against his cousin.
A most happy anniversary today to King George III of England and Princess Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, married in 1761. The couple met for the first time on their wedding day, but seems to have had a happy marriage. They would go on to have 15 children, and George, unlike his father and grandfather, never had a mistress.
And in 1831, George’s 3rd son was crowned as King William IV of the United Kingdon of Great Britian and Ireland, alongside his wife, Adelaide. William would be succeeded by his niece, Victoria, just 6 years later.
In birthdays today we have a few!!
First, in 1157 today, a fourth child and 3rd son was born to King Henry II and Queen Eleanor. The boy would be christened Richard, and would be known through history has Richard the Lionheart. The arms of England today, still bear his standard.
Today also marks the birthdays of Sancho II of Portugal in 1209, and Ferdinand IV of Germany, born in 1633. Happy Birthday guys!!
And one interesting death to share with you. Today in 1560, Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, future Earl of Leicester, was found dead at the bottom of a small flight of stairs with a broken neck. Now Robert was in service to Queen Elizabeth I as her Master of the Horse, and was a long time friend and confidante. It was believed at the time, that if Robert were not married, he would be a contender for the Queen in marriage. The sudden death of his wife caused such a scandal, that even though Amy’s death had been found accidental by an inquest, he would not be suitable for marriage to the Queen. Historians today believe that Amy had advanced breast cancer, which would have caused her bones to be brittle, and thus a short fall could have killed her.
Have a great Saturday everyone!
