Here us what I found for today!!
Today in 335, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was consecrated by Emperor Constantine.
And in 1206, Ogedei Khan was proclaimed Khagan or Emperor of the Mongols. He was the third son of Genghis Khan.
In 1791 today, King Louis XVI accepted and agreed to adopt the nre French Constitution put before him. Unfortunately he used the veto power that the Assembly was trying to strip him of, and he would be overthrown soon after.
In birthdays today we have a couple of note. First being that of Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI in 1475. He would go on to be a Cardinal, Duke, and possibly the inspiration for Machiavelli’s “The Prince”.
And today in 1520 or 1521, marks the birthday of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, longtime minister, statesman, confidant, and friend of Elizabeth I.
In 1676, Elisabeth Charlotte of Orleans, niece to King Louis XIV and mother of the future Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, was born today in France. She was also the paternal grandmother of Marie Antoinette.
And one interesting death today to mention. In 1598, King Phillip II of Spain died in Spain. He was the son of Charles V of Spain, Holy Roman Emperor. He was also the grand-nephew of Catherine of Aragon, husband of Mary I (Bloody Mary) of England, (before his accession to King), and actually courted the hand of Mary’s half sister, Elizabeth I of England, after Mary’s death in 1558. Phillip was also behind the failed Enterprise of England when the Spanish Armada was deafeated by both Mother Nature and the English, in 1588.
Have a great day all!!
