In 1338 today, one of the early naval battles of the Hundred Years War occured. Known as the Battle of Arnemuiden, it is also the first known naval battle in which artillery was used. One of the English ships had cannons and a hand gun, but unfortunately, they were vastly outnumbered by the French.
Also today is the anniversary for the Battle of Blore Heath as part of the War of the Roses, in 1459. It was the first major battle between Yorkist and Lancastrian forces, and was a decisive victory for the House of York.
We have several birthdays today! The first belonging to Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany in 1158. Geoffrey was the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitiane, and brother to Richard the Lionheart and John I of England.
Next in 1215, we have Kublai Khan, grandson of Ghengis Khan, then in 1713, Ferdinand VI of Spain was born in Madrid.
In 1759, Marie Clotilde of France, younger sister of Louis XVI and Queen of Sardinia was born at Versaille.
Skipping ahead to 1781, Princess Juliane of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfield was born in Switzerland. Juliane would go on the be a Grand Duchess of Russia by marriage to the Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich. She was also the aunt to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
Today in 1853 marks the birthday of Princess Marie Elisabeth of Saxe-Meiningen was born in Potsdam. Even as a member of the Prussian royal family, Marie would go on tow be a renowned composer of music.
And in 1914, Omar Ali Saifuddien III, Sultan of Brunei was born in the capital. He would oversee Brunei’s independence from the United Kingdom, and is sometimes called “The Father of Independence”.
