1986 – Princess Raiyah bint Al Hussein is born in Jordan to the late King Hussein and Queen Noor. She is the half sister to King Abdullah II and is living and working in Japan.
1450 – Agnes Sorel, mistress to Charles VII of France, dies suddenly at age 28 while on her way to visit him Jumieges where he was on campaign. She had given the king three daughters and was pregnant with her fourth child. It was believed at first that she died of dysentery, but later scientists discovered she died of mercury poisoning. Exactly why and who poisoned her is a mystery.
1670 – King Frederick III of Denmark and Norway died at age 60 in Copenhagen. He had been King since 1648, after he had served as Bishop of Verden and Archbishop of Bremen. He resigned those offices when his elder brother died, leaving Frederick as the heir to his father, Christian IV. Frederick spent part of his reign at war with the Swedes, and would become an absolute ruler, leaving his son as King Christian V.
1873 – Caroline Augusta of Bavaria died in Vienna at age 81. She was the daughter of King Maximilian I Joseph and Augusta Wilhelmine of Hesse-Darmstadt. She married the Crown Prince of Württemberg, William in 1808, but the marriage was unhappy and they divorced in 1814. She remarried in 1816, Austrian Emperor Francis I, but again, the marriage was childless. Caroline became known in Austria for her charity work, and she would remain there after the death of her spouse.
2002 – Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and sister to Queen Elizabeth II dies at age 71 in London after having her fourth stroke in four years. She was known for her lighthearted nature in opposition to her sister’s serious public face. Gore Vidal once said she was far too intelligent for her station in life. She was also one of the first royals to undergo a divorce, paving the way for her nephews years later.
