1594 – Henry III of Navarre is crowned as king of France, becoming known as Henry IV. He had previously been a Protestant, but converted to Catholicism upon his accession in France. As king, he would be popular with the people, for attempting to end the French Wars of religion. He was also the first French king from the House of Bourbon.
1898 – A gunman shoots at King George I of the Hellenes and his daughter Princess Marie. The assassination attempt would be unsuccessful and bolster his popularity.
272 – Approximate birthday of Roman Emperor Constantine I. Also called Constantine the Great, he was the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity, but also would issue the Edict of Milan in 313 calling for religious toleration for all. He would also famously found a new Imperial seat in the city of Byzantium, which was renamed Constantinople. It was also under him, that the Bible as we know it, began to take shape.
