1702 – Upon the death of her brother in law, William III, Anne ascends to the throne of England. She was the sister of Williams wife, Mary II. Mary had died of smallpox in 1694, but William remained king, with Anne as his successor unless he and Mary had children.
1293 – Beatrice of Castile is born in modern day Spain. She was the daughter of Sancho IV of Castile and Queen Maria. In 1309, she married Afonso IV of Portugal, and would see two of her daughters become Queens of Castile and Aragon, and her son would be Peter I of Portugal.
1748 – William V, Prince of Orange-Nassau is born in The Hague to William IV and Princess Anne of Britain. He became stadtholder in 1751, at the death of his father. He was 3 years old, and regents would rule in his stead until 1766, when he was able to assume majority. He was the last Stadtholder of the Dutch, as his son, was the first King of the Netherlands. William was also leader of the Dutch resistance against the French. He would finish is reign in exile.
1126 – Queen Urraca of Castile, Leon, and Galicia, died in childbirth at the age of 46. She was the heir Alfonso IV and Queen Constance of Burgundy and was queen regnant after the death of her father. She would marry Alfonso I of Aragon but the marriage would end due to her accusations of physical abuse. After the marriage was dissolved, they would go to war over various territories with Urraca emerging victorious. She was known as a prudent and effective ruler. Her son would ruler after her as Alfonso VII.
1702 – King William III and II of England and Scotland died of pneumonia, 8 years after the death of his wife, Mary II. They had ruled jointly since they deposed Mary’s father, James, in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and 1689. William and Mary had no children, so they were succeeded by Mary’s sister and the last Stuart monarch, Anne.
1844 – Charles XIV John of Sweden died in Stockholm at age 81. He had been king since 1818, when he succeeded the childless Charles XIII. He was actually born in France as Jean Bernadotte and was elected Crown Prince because of his military prowess and also because he was known for his kindness to Swedish prisoners during war. His direct descendants still rule Sweden today.
