1043 – Edward the Confessor is crowned as King of England. He was succeeding the Danish Harthacnut, who also ruled England. He would be last King of the House of Wessex and one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings. Under his reign saw the beginning of construction on the famed Westminster Abbey. His death without children in 1066 led to the Norman Invasion later that year.
1893 – Princess Maud of Fife is born to Louise, Princess Royal, daughter of the future Edward VII, and Alexander Duff, Duke of Fife. She was both a descendant of Queen Victoria, through her mother, and William IV, Victoria’s uncle, through her father. She would not normally be entitled to use the title “Her Royal Highness” but the title was granted to her and her sister. She would marry the Earl of Southesk, Charles Carnegie.
