Events:
1882 – A man named Roderick McLean attempts to assassinate Queen Victoria with a pistol. He was unsuccessful and apprehended. Later he was tried for treason and found not guilty but insane.

Birthday:
1316 – Probable birthdate of Robert II of Scotland. He was the grandson of Robert the Bruce through his daughter, Marjorie Bruce. He is the first Scottish monarch of the House of Stewart, which would rule Scotland until the union of the crowns in 1603, and after until the death of Queen Anne. He would become king in 1371, after his uncle, David II. He would spend time before and during his reign fighting with the Balliol family, which ruled Scotland before the Bruces, and also Edward III of England.

1843 – Princess Maria Clotilde of Savoy is born in Italy to Victor Emmanuel of Savoy, later king of a united Italy. She would marry into the Bonaparte nephew at 15, when she became the wife of Napoleon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte, nephew of Emperor Napoleon I. He was 37. The marriage was unpopular in both countries, and both parties were unhappy.

Deaths:
1316 – Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert I of Scotland died today shortly after giving birth to the future Robert II of Scotland. She was only 19 or 20 at her death. She had been a Princess of Scotland since age 9 and had spent some time as a captive under control of Edward I of England, then Edward II.

1835 – The last Holy Roman Emperor, Francis II died today in Vienna at age 67. He had been Emperor since age 24, and his reign saw the French Revolution, of which his paternal aunt, Marie Antoinette was a victim, and he would also see the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1806 he oversaw the official dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, and was declared Emperor of Austria as Francis I two years prior to that.

1855 – Russian Emperor Nicholas I died in St. Petersburg at age 55 of pneumonia. He was the son of Paul I, brother to Alexander I, and grandson to Catherine the Great. He is known as a reactionary, and because of a revolt on his coronation day, was known for his harsh methods and his full belief in his authority and the autocracy of the monarchy. During his reign, the arts including ballet began to flourish in Russian culture.

1921 – Another Nicholas I, this one of Montenegro, died while living in exile in France. Three years prior the small country had been absorbed into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which became Yugoslavia in 1929. He had been king since 1910, after the death of his uncle, Danilo I. He was actually the only King of Montenegro, as the monarchs were just known as prince and his was its last monarch overall.

Events:
1297 – Francesco Grimaldi, a leader and noble from Genoa, Italy, dressed as a monk with some men, to sneak into the only palace in Monaco. They were able to capture the palace and the legendary Rock of Monaco. The Grimaldi family still rules Monaco today.

1499 – King Louis XII of France marries the indomitable Duchess Anne of Brittany, his cousin, Charles VIII’s widow. They would have no sons, but two daughters. The eldest, Claude, became Duchess of Brittany in her own right, after her mother’s death, and also Queen of France, when she married Francis I, thus uniting Brittany and France.

1746 – During the Second Jacobite Rising, Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Stuart claimant, captured the town of Stirling in Scotland, but was not able to capture the castle. The rebellion ultimately failed.

Birthdays:
1864 – Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Avondale and Clarence, was born in Windsor, to Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII, and Princess Alexandra. He would spend time in the military, but not undergo any actual fighting. He would die early of influenza at age 28, just after being engaged to Victoria Mary, a German Princess, who after his death, bonded and ultimately married his younger brother, the future George V.

1873 – Elena of Montenegro is born ad the daughter of Nicholas I of Montenegro. She became Queen of Italy when she married Victor Emmanuel III in 1900. Her son, Umberto II was the last Italian King.

2011- In not so dead royals, twins are born in Copenhagen to Danish Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary. A boy and a girl are christened Vincent and Josephine. They are fifth and sixth in line to the throne of Denmark.

No major deaths.

Events:
1688 – King James II and VII of England and Scotland flees the island for France as the Glorious Revolution culminated in his deposition in favor of his daughter Mary and her husband, William of Orange.

Birthdays:
1777 – Alexander I of Russia is born in Saint Petersburg, under the rule of his grandmother, Catherine the Great. He and his brother were raised by Catherine and it was rumored that Alexander would be put on the throne ahead of his father, the future Paul I. He was successful militarily, leading Russia through the Napoleonic Wars and added the territories of Finland and parts of Poland. In the latter part of his reign, he became more conservative, and may reforms were undone, until his sudden death.

1864 – Princess Zorka of Montenegro is born as the daughter of Nicholas I of Montenegro. She would marry Peter, future King of Serbia, but would pass away before he became King. She had 4 children, including the future Alexander I of Yugoslavia. Sadly she would die while giving birth to her fifth child, at age 25.

1933 – In not so dead royals, Japanese Emperor Akihito is born to Emperor Hirohito in Tokyo. He would not succeed his father until 1989 and his the current reigning Emperor of Japan.

1943 – Also in not so dead royals, Queen consort of Sweden, Silvia is born in Heidelberg, Germany. She is the wife of King Carl XVI Gustav and the mother of the heir apparent, Crown Princess Victoria.

Deaths:
1230 – Berengaria of Navarre, Queen consort of Richard I of England, died long after her husband, in what is modern day France. Her birth date wasn’t recorded, so its unknown exactly how old she was. While she was married to Richard, she never actually stepped foot in England. She may have after Richard’s death, but there is no firm evidence. So it is said she is the only Queen of England to never step foot in England.
