Events:

37CE – Caligula is declared Roman Emperor after the Senate annuls the will of adopted grandfather, Tiberius. Caligula would rule Rome for less than 5 years before his assassination, and is still one of the most infamous Roman Emperors.

1229 – Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II is crowned as King of Jerusalem as part of the truce that ended the Sixth Crusade. His second wife Yolande, was an heiress of Jerusalem, but she had recently died, so Frederick’s claim to the throne was very weak.

1314 – The last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques DeMolay is burned at the stake under orders from the French King Phillip IV. DeMolay and the other Templars were accused of heresy and other crimes, but their immense land holdings and Phillip’s own debt to them is believed to be a motivating factor behind the executions.

Birthdays:

1496 – A daughter, christened Mary, is born to Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York. She was the younger sister to Henry VIII and Margaret, Scottish Queen consort. Mary’s first marriage would be to the (male) heir-less Louis XII of France, who would die just months into their marriage. She would marry the Duke of Suffolk, Charles Brandon, shortly after Louis’ death. She would later be the grandmother of the young Lady Jane Grey, who would rule England for nine days in 1553.

1555 – Francis, the future Duke of Alençon and Anjou is born to Henry II of France and Catherine de Medici. He would be the younger brother to three French kings, Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III. Although a Catholic, he would be considered a champion for the Protestant cause in the Netherlands against the Catholic forces of Spain and the Empire. For a period of time, he would be a suitor for Elizabeth I, despite the 20+ year age gap between them.

1609 – The future Frederick III of Denmark is born as a younger son of Christian IV of Denmark. He was not expected to accede to the throne until the death of his older brother, also named Christian. He would become the Danish king by election after the sudden death of his father in 1648. While initially unsuccessful in military endeavors, he would lead an a defensive measure that protected Copenhagen. Frederick would capitalize on his popularity after the victory to change Denmark from an elective monarchy to an absolute monarchy.

1848 – A sixth child is born to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert named Princess Louise. In 1871, she married the heir to the Duchy of Argyll, John Campbell. He became Governor General of Canada in 1878 and he and Louise would live there for years, despite her unhappiness in Ottawa. She would live until her 91st year, tying for the longest lived of Victoria’s children.

Deaths:

978 – Edward, King of the English is murdered under suspicious circumstances at Corfe Castle. While how he was killed and by whom is still contested, it is believed his stepmother, Aelfthryth was behind it. He is called Edward the Martyr now, and is venerated as a Saint in the Catholic and Anglican churches and a Passion-bearer in the Eastern Orthodox church.

1584 – The first Tsar of all the Russias, Ivan the Terrible would die in Moscow of a stroke. He was the first to consolidate Russian territories and derived the word Tsar from his claim that he was descended from the Roman Caesars. While in one part he was an effective ruler and politician, he was also ruthless, paranoid, and violent, to the point of killing his son and groomed heir, also named Ivan. This would leave his mentally handicapped son, Feodor I, as Tsar, beginning what is called the Time of Troubles.

1913 – George I, King of the Hellenes dies after being shot being in the back by a man claiming to be a Socialist. The Danish born George had been declared King in 1863 at age 17. He was a younger son of Christian IX of Denmark, and his siblings would number a future Danish King, British Queen, and Russian Empress. His son, Constantine would succeed him, but no Greek ruler after would be as secure on the throne as he was.

1965 – A 45 year old King Farouk I of Egypt dies living in exile in Rome. He was overthrown in 1952, in favor of his infant son, Faud II. Farouk had been king since age 16, and was despised for his over the top lifestyle, even during the wars. He was largely an ineffective and useless ruler, and his son’s kingship would be ended in 1953, when Egypt became a republic.

1983 – The last Italian king, Umberto II dies in exile in Switzerland. He had been in exile for 37, since Italy was declared a republic in 1946. He was called the May King, since he only ruled from May 9th, 1946, until June 12th, 1946. His father had abdicated in his favor, but it was too late. The republican wave was already too strong. Some historians believe that if his father, Victor Emmanuel III, had abdicated sooner, the monarchy may have been saved.

2012 – George Tupou V, King of Tonga dies after just six years on the throne. He succeeded his father, Tupou IV. He would be in favor of transferring power to the Prime Minister and making Tonga more of a democracy. He would pass from leukemia, with his brother and heir Tupou VI, at his side.

Today in 1307, many members of the Knights Templar order were arrested simultaneously under orders of King Phillip IV, who was ironically, deeply in debt to them. The members, including the Gran Master Jacques de Molay were tortured into confessions heresy, idolatry, homosexuality, and scores of other offenses. They were subsequently burned at the stake. Ironically, today is the birthday of de Molay, who was born in 1244.

In 1453 today, we see the birth of Edward of Westminster in London. Edward was the only son of Henry VI of England and Margaret of Anjou. Edwards inheritance to the throne was in question during the War of the Roses and he would perish in the Battle of Tewksbury defending it.
Next in 1499, we see the birth of Claude of France, future Queen as the wife of Francis I. She was the eldest daughter of Louis XII of France and Anne, Duchess of Brittany. Claude became Duchess of Brittany in her own right, but could only be Queen through marriage because of France’s Salic law.

Lastly in 1933 today, the future Queen Narriman of Egypt was born. She was not a royal but was chosen to help bolster the popularity of the Egpytian monarchy. She would be their last Queen.
Our first death of note today, comes in 54 CE where we see Claudius, Roman Emperor, perish by possible poisoning. It’s still contended who did the poisoning, we do know that his successor would go on to be infamous as it was his grand-nephew, Nero.
Next in 1706, we mark the passing of Iyasu I of Ethiopia. He had fallen ill while traveling and was assassinated by agents of his son and successor, Tekle Haymanot.
Lastly in 1825 today, we have the passing of Bavarian king Maximilian I Joseph. Maximilian was a great patron of the arts, as a fellow of the British Royal Society for Improving Knowledge, founded the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and ordered the construction of the National Theatre in Munich.

Danish Royalty, French Royalty, Greek Royalty, Not So Dead Royalty, Romanian Royalty, Romans, Swedish Royalty, The Hanovers, The Louis of France

Afternoon all! Here we go!!
For starters, today in 37 CE, Tiberius became Roman Emperor after the death of his step father, Octavian (or Augustus). He was also the great-uncle of Caligula, the uncle of Claudius, and the great-great uncle of Nero.
Skipping ahead to 1714, the new King of the United Kingdom, George I arrived in Britain for the first time from his native Hanover. As a great-grandson of James I, and a Protestant, he was heir to the House of Stuart. There were several claimaints who were closer, but Catholic. George was ridiculed for being too German at the time, but contemporary historians paint him in a more positive light.
And a most happy anniversary to the not so dead royals of Greece, King Constantine II and Anne-Marie of Denmark. They were married today in 1964.
In birthdays today, we have Marie of Valois, daughter of John II of France, sister to Charles V of France and Joan, Queen of Navarre, born in 1344 today.
We also have in 1434, Eleanor of Portugal, wife of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III and mother to Maximilian I.
Also today in 1786, Christian VIII of Denmark was born. He was King of Denmark from 1839-1848, and King of Norway for a brief time in 1814.
And our last birthday, also of the not-so-dead variety, is that of Queen Anne of Romania, wife of the deposed King Michael. She was born today in 1923 in Paris.
In our first death today, we have King Louis VIII of France, one time Crusader and husband of the indomitable Eleanor of Aquitaine. Louis was succeeded by his son, Phillip Augustus, or Phillip II of France.
And lastly we have the death of Charles XV and IV of Sweden and Norway, in 1872. He passed in Malmo and is buried in Stockholm.
Have an awesome day guys!

Dutch Royalty, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth I, Henry II, Naploeon, Plantagenets, Romans, Scottish Royalty

Good evening everyone!! Here’s what I found for September 4th!!
Today in 476, the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus was deposed and Odoacer declared himself King of Italy. This traditionally marks the end of the Western Roman Empire.
Also in deposed monarchs, today in 1870, Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon I was overthrown and France formally declared itself the Third Republic. He had been elected President of the Second Republic in 1848, staged a coup in 1851 and was crowned Emperor of France in 1852.
And today in 1948, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, formally abdicated her throne to her daughter, Juliana. She cited her failing health after World War II, but would live for another 14 years. She was the first sitting Queen to address the US Congress, and the second woman in history to be inducted into the English Order of the Garter.
In birthdays today we have a couple:
Today in 1241 marks the birthdate of Alexander III of Scotland. And in 1454, Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham
was born. Buckingham would go on to be a major player in the War of the Roses, nearly succeeding in becoming King himself, and is a suspect in the murder of the Princes in the Tower. Lastly in birthdays, today in 1755 Count Axel von Fersen the Younger was born in Stockholm. He would go on to a great military career for Sweden and France, and may have been a lover of the doomed Marie Antoinette.
Two deaths to mention today; the first being Joan of England and Queen of Sicily. Joan was the seventh child of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and sister to Richard I and John I. She would sadly die at age 33 at  Fontevrault Abbey, during childbirth. Both of her parents and brother Richard would be buried there too.
And our last death of note today, belongs to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Robert was a lifelong friend and confidant (and lover, depending who you ask) of Elizabeth I. He had been in Elizabeths formal service, starting as her Master of the Horse, later becoming a Privy Councillor and General, starting at her accession. He died shortly after overseeing her visit to the troops at Tillbury. A week before he died, he sent Elizabeth a letter. When she died, the letter was found next to her bed in a box with “His last letter” written on it.
Have a great rest of the day everyone!!
