While not a royal event, today in 1517 something did happen that changed the political landscape of Europe, and thus the world. Martin Luther would hang his 95 theses from the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg Germany.
We have several birthdays today, the first being that of Ferdinand I of Portugal in 1345. He would spend most of his reign at war with this illegitmate brother over the crown of Castile in Spain.
Another King of Portugal was born today in 1391, Edward I. He was a grandson of Edward III of England and brother the the famous Henry the Navigator of Portugal. And a third Portugese king born today in 1838, Luis of Portugal. While the political situation on Portugal at the time was difficult, Luis made great strides in cultural and scientific endeavors.
Next in 1851, Louise of Sweden was born to Charles XV of Sweden and Queen Louise. She went on to be Queen of Denmark as the wife of Frederick VIII.
Skipping ahead to 1922, Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia was born. He was the last monarch of Cambodia and oversaw the split from France. He abdicated twice and served and a puppet governor for the Khmer Rouge.
We also have two not-so-dead royal birthdays today. The first being that of Reza Pahlavi, Crown Prince of Iran. He was the last Crown Prince and left Iran during the 1979 Revolution.
And in 2005 today, Infanta of Spain Leonor was born to the Spainish heir, Prince Felipe. She is currently second in line to the crown of Spain.
Our first death today comes in 1214 from Eleanor of England, Queen of Castile, just a mere 28 days after her husband Alfonso VIII of Castile. She was 52 and had married him when she was 14 years old, and would give him 14 children.
Next in 1732, Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia died after having a stroke the previous year. He abdicated in favor of his son, Charles Emmanuel III, in order to marry his mistress in 1730.
And in 1765 today, Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland died in London. He was the younger brother of King George II and had been acting as an advisor to his nephew, George III, since 1760.
Have a great day!!

Today in 1200, Isabella of Angouleme would be crowned Queen Consort of England at the age of 12, as the wife of King John. She would go on to give John 5 children before his death in 1216. She would have another 9 children by her second husband.
Our first birthday today belongs to Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox in 1515. What makes Margaret interesting is that her mother was Margaret Tudor, Dowager Queen of Scotland, who was the older sister of Henry VIII. As a possible heir to the throne, Margaret spent her life in the English court. Her son, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, would go on to be the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, and father to James I and VI.
Today was also the birthday of King Zog I of Albania in 1895. Before becoming King, he served as Prime Minister and President. He was elected King when the monarchy was established in 1928 until his fleeing the country in 1939, when it was invaded by Italy.
Our first death today is that of Helen of Zadar, Queen consort of Croatia in 976. Not much is known of her life, but it is known that she was adored and loved by her subjects for her grace and charity. She was also called “Helen the Glorious”.
And today in 1895, Empress Myeongseong of Korea was assassinated by Japanese agents in one of the Imperial Houses. Historians have called her arrogant and corrupt, but said that her assassination was barbaric nonetheless. According to accounts she was raped repeatedly and hacked to pieces, before being burnt. She was the last Empress of Korea.
On that note, make the most of today! Have a good one!!
